Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a procedure carried out under a dentist’s supervision to lighten the colour of the tooth surface. Tooth colour varies from person to person and can darken over time with tea, coffee, smoking and similar factors. On this page we explain who whitening suits and how it is planned at our practice in Bitez, Bodrum.

Before whitening

The teeth and gums need to be healthy before whitening. At the examination we look at:

  • Decay and gum disease: if present, these are treated first.
  • Tartar and stains: often a clean alone makes a noticeable difference to the colour.
  • Fillings, crowns and bridges: whitening only lightens natural tooth tissue; the colour of fillings and crowns does not change. If there are fillings or crowns on the front teeth, they may need to be replaced after whitening.
  • The cause of the discolouration: some discolouration (for example, from certain medicines or tooth development) responds only to a limited extent.

Methods

  • In-practice (in-office) whitening: the main method we use at our practice. After the gums are protected, a whitening gel is applied to the teeth. It is done in a single appointment and repeated if needed.
  • At-home whitening with custom trays: we also use this method depending on the case. Custom trays are made from a digital impression of the teeth. The gel provided by the dentist is used with these trays at home, for the time and frequency specified; the process is followed with check-ups.

Which method is suitable depends on the condition of the teeth, sensitivity and your expectations.

How white, and for how long?

The shade that can be reached varies from person to person; it depends on the starting colour and structure of the teeth. That is why we do not promise a particular shade. Over time the colour can darken again, especially with tea, coffee, red wine and smoking; when needed, a top-up can be done under a dentist’s supervision.

Risks and things to be aware of

The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which usually eases within a few days after treatment. If the gel touches the gums, there may be temporary irritation. When whitening is carried out under a dentist’s supervision with suitable products, no permanent damage to the enamel is expected. Treatments without a dentist’s supervision and unsuitable products can cause sensitivity and gum problems.

Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Frequently asked questions

Does teeth whitening damage the teeth?

When carried out under a dentist’s supervision with suitable products, no permanent damage to the enamel is expected. There may be temporary sensitivity. This is also why we examine the teeth before starting whitening.

What should I be careful about after whitening?

In the first days, it is recommended to avoid strongly coloured drinks and foods such as tea, coffee and red wine, and smoking. If there is sensitivity, you can use the products we recommend.

Will my fillings and crowns whiten too?

No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth. If there are fillings or crowns on the front teeth, they may need to be replaced after whitening to match the colour.

Can a darkened tooth that has had root canal treatment be whitened?

For teeth that have had root canal treatment, whitening from inside the tooth may be an option. We assess whether it is suitable with an X-ray and an examination.
